Research activities:
  • Main research interests are bacterial diversity and ecology, phylogeny, classification and taxonomy of bacteria.

  • The laboratory has for many years had a strong tradition in polyphasic taxonomic research of symbiotic nitrogen fixers. Special research interest therefore include rhizobia and agrobacteria, but also other  symbiotic bacteria and plant pathogens.

  • Other topics of particular interest include diversity of bacteria in terrestrial and aquatic biofilms in Antarctica,  diversity and function of bacteria in marine benthic foodwebs and in marine intertidal sediments with a focus on the nitrogen cycle. Techniques used include culture-based methods as well as metagenomics.
