Research activities: 

Pieter Stragier holds a Phd in Medical Sciences, which he obtained at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Antwerp) and the UA on the subject of Mycobacterium ulcerans. He started his study career at the VUB, where he obtained a bachelor and master degree in Biomedical Sciences as well as a Manama in Medical and Pharmaceutical Research. During his PhD he added a Manama diploma in Molecular Biotechnology to his curriculum. Before joining the LM-UGent team, Pieter worked at the ITM, UGent Immunology and the WIV.

Pieter has a broad research focus with molecular microbiology as a central link.

  • Characterization and phylogeny of plantpathogens (Dickeya, Clavibacter, Xanthomonas)
  • Genome characteristics and phylogeny of different bacteria (Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Paenibacillus)
  • Microbial diversity in Antarctic samples
  • Whole genome analysis and metagenomics
  • Genome assembly and annotation
  • MLSA and MLVA

He leads a group of bio-informaticians (FBI) to support the lab in the use of Linux and server related issues as well as support in the use of Python.

He also leads a workgroup on scientific communication and vulgarisation.
